Reptile & Amphibian Wildlife Diversity Technician: North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. Working under the state Herpetologist, Jeff Hall, I aid in the conservation of North Carolina’s Species of Greatest Conservation Need. Projects include but are not limited to: Carolina Gopher frog monitoring and head-starting, Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake and Timber Rattlesnake research, Project Bog Turtle, Spotted Turtle population inventory, Hellbender snorkel surveying, listed species monitoring (trapping, road cruising, etc), habitat monitoring, habitat restoration, management of all rattlesnake reports from the public, public speaking. January 2021-Present
Field Technician: The Orianne Society. Assisted with projects focusing on reptiles of conservation concern: Gopher Tortoise population monitoring (line-distance surveys), Southern Hognose Snake road cruising surveys, Federally listed Eastern Indigo Snake and Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake occupancy surveys, Spotted Turtle radio telemetry, Suwannee Alligator Snapping Turtle trap surveys, data collection for Project Pine Snake. Other responsibilities not limited to field identification of herp species, data management, remote GPS navigation, and ArcMap data collection. September 2020-December 2020
Research Technician: Saint Francis Satyr (SFS) Project, Michigan State University Haddad Applied Ecology Lab. Responsible for management and restoration of federally endangered SFS habitat, captive breeding and husbandry of SFS, wild SFS monitoring in Sandhills swamp habitat, mark and recapture, data collection and entry, navigation of remote sand roads with 4WD. Undergraduate Honors Thesis: Davenport Amphibian Ecology Lab. “The Effects of an Introduced Salmonid on Blackbelly Salamander Body Condition and Behavior in an Artificial Stream Experiment.” Responsible for determining field sites in Western NC, remote navigation, field collection and identification of Blackbelly salamanders and Rainbow Trout, weighing and measuring, Visible Implant Elastomers (VIE), and set up of artificial stream experiment. Collaborative project with the Tennessee Aquarium Conservation Institute, Fall 2019- Spring 2020. Completed manuscript and defense May 2020
Researcher: Earthwatch Institute. Facilitated citizen science for the expedition “Climate Change at the Arctic’s Edge.” Led data collection for a long-term wetland community study focusing on aquatic invertebrate and amphibian assemblage, including Wood Frogs and Boreal Chorus Frogs. Egg mass surveys and collection, dip-netting, trapping, remote GPS navigation, water quality measurements, field identification of species. Undergraduate Research Assistantship: Davenport Amphibian Ecology Lab. Competitive, university wide assistantship. Responsible for field work and data collection in Southern Appalachia, including surveys of terrestrial salamander populations, reptile and amphibian community structure at high elevation ponds, mesocosm set up and monitoring, kick seining, VIE, aquatic trapping. Assisted with literature review, manuscript writing and editing. Personal research focused on the prey/predator behavioral interactions between Wood Frog tadpoles, Marbled Salamander larvae, paedomorphic Mole Salamanders, and Anax sp. predators. Researcher: Bali Starling post release study. Solely responsible for monitoring of IUCN Critically Endangered Bali Starling populations, nest box monitoring, camera trap set up, remote GPS navigation, citizen science initiatives, population assessment summary. Field Assistant: Neuse River Waterdog Watch. Aided in field work, obtained river quality samples, logged speed, measured depth, surveyed populations. Eastern North Carolina, 2015
Salamander Technician: Beamer Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution Lab. Aided in field collection of Desmognathus (Dusky) salamanders for phylogenetic study in Western North Carolina. Completed a sexual isolation trial of Carolina Mountain Dusky and Northern Dusky Salamanders. Dr. David Beamer dissertation research, 2014-2015
SPECIAL SKILLS & INTERESTS
Field: Extensive remote field experience in varied ecosystems, regions, and conditions i.e., Southern Appalachia, Arctic tundra, Longleaf Pine savannah, temperate forest, wetland, marine, tropical.
Training covered but not limited to: field identification of herp species (including anuran calls), field data collection, remote GPS navigation, ArcMap, aquatic trapping (amphibians/turtles), amphibian egg mass surveys and collection, ATV training, off road 4WD vehicle operation, kayaking/canoeing, VHF telemetry, turtle palpation, snake probing, venomous snake handling/tubing, Visible Implant Elastomer tagging (VIE), PIT tagging, disease sampling (Ophidiomyces), mesocosm experimental monitoring, herp camera trap set up, YSI operation, dip-netting, kick seining, captive husbandry (lepidopteran, amphibian, avian), gun safety training, polar bear safety training.
Genetics: Experience with PCR, extraction techniques, genetic sampling.
Public Speaking and Education: Extensive experience with public speaking in various settings such as professional conferences, lectures, and educational outreach.
