Hi! I’m Kabryn Mattison. I’m a Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholar and traveling field ecologist. I am a graduate of Appalachian State University with a degree in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology.

I made this space with the goal of connection with other scientists and opportunities, as well as connection to any dreamers who simply need a dose of, “If I can do it, so can you.” Maybe most of all, I want to be the person I always needed.

I’m a first generation undergraduate, from a small traditional Southern community. My experiences have continually magnified the need for inspiring, relatable scientists that choose connection to their communities over status. I believe it is time for changes in the sciences and that the diversity and inclusion STEM has been lacking may just hold the very answers we’ve been seeking to address our modern problems. It is time to take the ego out of academia and to start asking the hard questions in conservation.

My current research interests are broad, though I tend to focus on ecological projects with heavy field components and direct conservation or policy implications. As an artist, I strive to use writing, poetry, and photographs to communicate my passion for the natural world, and my drive to save it from the complex challenges it faces. I hope to use my research experiences to not only build upon our scientific understanding of the world, but to help explain the urgency of using an ecological mindset to drive our society’s choices. I’m committed to serving the world as a bold and honest witness to the swift changes happenings on our planet.

Let’s chat.
